The Sofia wastewater treatment plant in Kubratovo is the "jewel in the system of Veolia". The plant is one of the few in the world which ensures on its own the energy needed for its processes, said Stanislav Stanev, Technical Director of Veolia Bulgaria and Deputy Executive Director of Sofiyska Voda AD, operated by Veolia, in Made in Green on Bloomberg TV.
To date, Sofiyska Voda meets most (around 90%) of its own energy needs thanks to the green energy generated at the wastewater treatment plant where biogas, a source of green electric and heat energy, is produced from the sludge.
Stanislav Stanev added that full energy independence of the company will be achieved by 2025 with the implementation of the project for the construction of a photovoltaic power station.
"Wastewater reuse has a huge potential not only for use in agriculture and the industry. It has enormous energy potential, as it has constant temperature throughout the entire year”, he also said.
"Ecological transformation is above all a matter of responsibility. We, at Veolia, have the mission to resource the world and guide this sector towards the needed new technologies and innovations", Stanev commented and added that "innovations are the key to achieve the challenging objectives – we consider and find innovative solutions on a daily basis with which we will be able to do it."
