Veolia becomes the first producer of local energy from waste in Corrèze

  • Veolia will build and operate a new Energy Recovery Plant in Corrèze, over a period of 25 years.

  • The site will supply local energy produced from waste to nearly 3,000 homes with electricity and 6,500 homes with district heating.

  • 50,000 tonnes of steam per year to reduce the energy consumption of the factory specialising in baby food and located in the region.

  • Veolia's expertise in both efficiency and technology will guarantee the strategic autonomy of the Corrèze region.

Veolia and SYTTOM 19 announce a strategic partnership for the next 25 years for a public service delegation covering the construction and management of a new Energy Recovery Plant (UVE) in Saint-Pantaléon-de-Larche, near Brive-la-Gaillarde (19). This project, worth 440 million euros, is part of the territory's ambition to reduce residual waste and strengthen the energy autonomy of the Corrèze region.

A leader in local energy, Veolia will implement the best of its know-how in terms of both efficiency and technology to guarantee the strategic autonomy of the Corrèze region.

It will be a high-performance energy recovery unit that will be a model of environmental and technological integration.

With a processing capacity of 79,200 tonnes of non-recyclable household waste per year, the plant will save nearly 40,000 tonnes of carbon emissions per year, in particular through the production of 41,000 MWh of electricity, the equivalent of the consumption of 18,700 inhabitants.

On the technological level, this new UVE will use artificial intelligence (AI) so that employees who will work on the operation of the site can gain comfort and efficiency in their missions. AI will be used on all methods of operating the site such as the management of the quantity of waste in the pit, for the high-efficiency boiler or even the recovery of energy on the condensed steam.

It will also integrate innovative technologies to limit the environmental impact, such as dry flue gas treatment and the reuse of water in the process, thus ensuring zero liquid discharge and a perfect circular loop to preserve the territory's resources.

With commissioning scheduled for November 2028, the UVE will offer remarkable energy performance:

  • 41 GWh/year of electrical energy produced, covering the equivalent of the annual electricity consumption of around 3000 households.
  • 31 GWh of heat/year produced for the urban network, equivalent to the annual heating consumption of 6,500 homes.
  • 50,000 tonnes/year of steam for the Blédina factory, the equivalent of the annual heating consumption of 7,200 homes.

Focusing on the territorial anchoring of the economic dimension of the project, more than 80% of the partners will come from Nouvelle-Aquitaine, guaranteeing significant regional benefits for Corrèze. With a planned start on January 1, 2025, this partnership is based on a common vision shared with the local community around innovative and sustainable governance.

From a strategic point of view, local energy represents a considerable asset for Corrèze to strengthen its autonomy and energy sovereignty. Local energies (waste water, waste heat, etc.) are a concrete solution to protect the purchasing power of our fellow citizens and stabilize prices for energy-consuming retailers and industrialists. They could reduce the European Union's energy dependence on imported fossil fuels by 30%, potentially covering the consumption of 50 million inhabitants.

"This partnership demonstrates the confidence in Veolia's expertise, which has been able to offer a solution adapted to the needs of the region, both optimized in terms of its energy production and virtuous in terms of the preservation of resources. It illustrates the ambition of GreenUp, our Group's strategic plan which aims in particular to accelerate the development of local energy in the regions from previously underexploited deposits." declared Jean-François Nogrette, CEO of Veolia France..

"This contract with Veolia is the culmination of our long-term commitment to a cleaner, greener and more autonomous region", says Frédéric Soulier, Mayor of Brive and President of SYTTOM 19.. "It significantly strengthens our energy autonomy while fitting perfectly into the strategy of reducing residual waste implemented by our master plan."
